Services – An Overview

On a select basis, and as a component of his ongoing research, Professor Barnwell works with senior leaders to support enterprise-wide performance improvement and strategic change management initiatives.

As an advisor, Robert is able to leverage his research and professional experience in performance improvement and strategic change management to help corporate leadership achieve rapid and lasting results. These results typically include:

  • Reduced lead-time for implementing revitalization initiatives
  • Stabilization and strengthening of the core business
  • Rationalization of costs and increased profitability (operating margins)
  • Enhanced asset utilization and operating efficiencies
  • Strengthened operating cash flows and improved liquidity and credit profiles
  • Increased share price and market capitalization

Further, because these initiatives also improve a company’s competitive and strategic position, participating companies may witness notably higher revenues and greater market share – often within as few as 18-24 months.

Services – Client Offerings

Scholar-In-Residence (“SIR”): As a component of his research, Robert will work with 2-4 companies concurrently as a “Scholar-In-Residence” on strategy development and execution initiatives.  These SIR projects allow companies to incorporate best practices from the study while testing and refining the latest theories in strategy development and implementation.   Depending upon the needs and desires of the host company, SIR projects may last from 90 days to 2-years or more while compensation is paid in the form of a monthly stipend typically ranging from $5,000 to $20,000.

Strategy Audits & Reviews: The unfortunate reality is that almost 90% of strategic initiatives fail.  To address this challenge, the Strategy Audit assesses the company’s understanding of its industry, market and business and benchmarking its strategic capabilities against best practices.  By doing so, the Strategy Audit identifies specific strengths and weaknesses in strategic management and highlights any areas of potential improvement.  Strategy Audits are typically completed in 45-60 days with compensation paid as a one-time honorarium in the amount of $45,000 to $65,000.

Interim Chief Strategy Officer (CSO):  In select and highly limited situations, Robert will serve in an interim Chief Strategy Officer to provide a more direct and hands-on role in helping management establish and drive their strategic initiatives.  In such cases Robert will help staff the senior-level project team, participate in strategy development, establish structure and systems to support execution, and monitor and refine performance.  Because of the significant and unique requirements associated with such a role, fee requirements must reflect the individual situation.

If interested in hosting Professor Barnwell as an advisor, please contact Robert for more details. Participating companies are generally large publicly-listed corporations (or one of their subsidiaries or affiliates) and, depending upon the nature of the project, are asked only to pay a modest one-time honorarium or monthly stipend plus any direct expenses.
